Motion 1

Murray Clarke (NSW Rowing Association), Chris Newton (Glebe resident):

This meeting calls on NSW Maritime, Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority, Sydney City Council, Leichhardt Council, the NSW Government, NSW Department of Planning, Frank Sartor Minister for Planning, Sandra Nori, Member for Port Jackson and Verity Firth and all other candidates for Balmain to reject the Development Application and Environmental Assessment for the Dry Boat Storage and Marina in Rozelle Bay, and to retain the existing uses on and around Rozelle Bay.
Rochelle Porteous (LMC Councillor and Greens candidate for Balmain) proposed an amendment to this motion. It was agreed that her amendment would be taken as a separate motion. (See below.)

Passed unanimously

Motion 2

John Buckingham (The Glebe Society) / David Lawrence (Save Rozelle Bay Association): (Tony Larkum took the Chair for this part of the meeting):

This meeting rejects the Dry Boat Storage and Marina proposed for Rozelle Bay because of the impact it will have on the amenity of local residents, traditional users of Rozelle Bay and the users of the foreshore park and walkway. The proposed development is inappropriate for this bay which is small, unflushed, contaminated and suffering from the loss of its natural marine animal and plant life and which has residents and park users within 100 metres of the activities created by the proposed development.

Further, we support genuine maritime industry and believe that following appropriate de-contamination of the bay and the restoration of the original natural ecological communities of the bay, the site should then be considered for an activity which:

  • is genuinely “working harbour”;
  • is small scale;
  • is non-polluting;
  • maximises the views to and from the water;
  • does not alienate the traditional users of the bay;
  • does not detract from the present enjoyment of the bay and the foreshore park and walk way;
  • recognises the cultural, and historical heritage and value of the rowing course;
  • recognises that the rowing/paddling of craft has clear priority over other activities in the bay;
  • does not create traffic congestion; and,
  • provides unhindered, continuous pedestrian access to the waterfront.

Passed unanimously

Motion 3

David Lawrence (Save Rozelle Bay Association) / Tony Larkum (The Glebe Society):

This meeting seeks an urgent meeting with The Minister for Planning, Frank Sartor, to put the feelings of this assembly to him. Each community group at this assembly to include one representative in the delegation.

Unanimous

Motion 4

Motion from the floor - Rochelle Porteous (LMC Councillor and Greens candidate for Balmain) / Kate Hamilton (LMC Councillor):

This meeting calls for a full and proper community consultation, reinstatement of all check and balances in the State Planning Assessment legislation and reinstatement of assessment of local land by local authorities - in this case Leichhardt Council.

Copies of these motions were sent to:

  • The Premier of NSW, Morris Iemma
  • The Minister for Planning, Frank Sartor
  • The local member, Sandra Nori
  • NSW Maritime
  • Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority
  • All known election candidates for the new seat of Balmain, and all relevant media.
