Glebe is an inner Sydney suburb with a
distinct village character and strong community atmosphere. Nestled between the city, Sydney University, Harold Park and Blackwattle Bay, Glebe's primary commercial area stretches along the spine of Glebe Point Road, a main street which retains many original Victorian buildings and links the University and city edge to the sea. Trading in these charming buildings are cafes, restaurants, and quirky stores operated by independent retailers - and one of Sydney's best markets every Saturday morning. Taken together, the retail mix combines to create an ambience that is alternative, bohemian, creative, holistic and youthful. Glebe is a colourful, accessible place to interact with creative, friendly people in chatty cafes, lively pubs and quirky stores. |

The 1960s saw the start of organised resident action in the inner
city. Glebe was threatened by two major proposals which would:
destroy the distinctive Victorian character of the suburb by
demolition of terrace houses to make way for three-storey flats, cut
the suburb into three to make way for freeways, and destroy
Lyndhurst, a fine Regency villa now occupied by the Historic Houses
Trust of NSW. The Glebe Society was formed in March 1969 to fight these proposals. In 1970 the Society prepared a Master Plan for the area which resulted in the National Trust's listing of Glebe as a Conservation Area in 1974 with the Heritage Council of NSW. The Glebe Society's aims include:

For these children it is a once in a lifetime opportunity. The children found it a very enriching experience and staff and parents were very appreciative of the support from members of the Glebe community. This year, the 15 Year 6 students and their teacher, Ms Eves, are planning their end of year camp excursion and are hoping to travel to Sovereign Hill in Ballarat Victoria for 5 days and 4 nights from October 13th to 17th. They will be travelling there and back by train. The children have been busy fundraising and to date have raised $1,000 towards the excursion. However they still need to find another $350 per child and would like to appeal to the Glebe community for support for the camp. If you would like more information on the specifics of the camp, please do not hesitate to call Ms Eves at the school at lunchtimes (1.15pm-2pm) on 9660 4549. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wanted volunteers interested in helping children with literacy and numeracy difficulties The Glebe Homework Helpers Club was started in Term 2 to help students with their homework and to assist with any difficulties in Literacy and Numeracy.
