The Glebe Society

Action Groups

Thankyou for rejoining the Glebe Society!

The Glebe Society owes its success to a number of small groups that look after the many and varied interests of the Society. Each group is run by a convenor and some have only one or two members while others have 5-10 members. Some just "get on with it" while others meet from time to time to consider various issues. The groups report to the Society's Management Committee through their convenors.

What the groups do
The following is a brief description of what each group does. If you would like to know more, contact the appropriate convenor. Names and phone numbers are listed in the back of each Bulletin.

Arts, culture and media
The main activity is organising the annual "Art and About" in Glebe. This involves other community groups, such as the Glebe Youth Service, and the City Council.

Bays and foreshores
This group led the campaign against the dry boat storage facility proposed for Rozelle Bay, and was closely involved in achieving the recently completed foreshore walk.

Blackwattle Cove Coalition (BCC)
BCC comprises representatives from the Glebe Society and the Glebe Chamber of Commerce as well as people from Ultimo and Pyrmont. It aims to promote the rejuvenation of the "no man's land" between Ultimo/Pyrmont and Glebe, and in particular ensure public access to Wentworth Park and the Blackwattle Cove foreshores.

Bulletin
Can you write articles, take photos, proofread, help with layout/production, distribution or anything else?
Environment and open space
Promotes environmental awareness in Glebe, and protects and promotes our parks and open space.

Event coordination
The Society conducts many social and educational events. Organisers and helpers are always needed.
Glebe against Global Warming
What can we do locally to tackle one of the greatest challenges facing the world today?

Heritage
Protects and promotes our built and natural heritage. The Society's origins lie in the fight against plans to drive an expressway through the centre of Glebe and the rampant destruction of the suburb's VIctorian houses by developers.

Infrastructure and defect reporting
Keeps the Council up to to the mark in maintaining basic infrastructure such as footpaths etc.

Membership
Runs membership campaigns and organises welcome nights for new members.

Planning
Our watchdog on all aspects of development in Glebe. Responsible for commenting on development applications (DAs), proposed Council and government planning instruments etc.

Publicity
Do you think you might be good at chatting up the journos on the local paper ?

Transport and traffic
Through traffic, pedestrian safety, and public transport (including light rail) are all of great importance to Glebe. Help put our case to the Council and State Government bureaucrats.

Website
You don't need to be a nerd to write for our website, but it would help if some computer literate members of the Society would join the current team which at present is hard-pressed trying to update the site
