The 20th Annual Glebe Music Festival 8th November to 8th December 2009

 
The 20th Annual Glebe Music Festival, 8th November to 6th December 2009, again brings local and international artists together for a celebration of music in unique venues in and around the Glebe community. Tickets can be purchased at the door for all concerts except the Margaretta Cottage concert Sunday afternoon 29th November. All are welcome at the free opening concert by the Sydney Conservatorium Ensembles Studies Unit at the Great Hall, University of Sydney on Sunday 8th November at 3pm. This annual event is an excellent opportunity to hear Australia’s up-and-coming musicians at their best.
 
On Sunday 22nd November at 3pm Bel a cappella choir can be heard at the St Scholastica’s Chapel, corner of Arcadia Road and Avenue Road Glebe. The choir will perform: Ave Maria (Robert Parsons 1531-1572), Songs of Farewell (Hubert Parry 1848-1918), Nunc Dimittis (Gustav Holst 1874-1934), Like as the Hart Desireth the Waterbrook (Herbert Howells (1892-1983), Hear My Prayer (Henry Purcell (1659-1695), And I Saw a New Heaven (Edgar Bainton 1880-1956), Mass in G minor (Ralph Vaughan Williams 1872-1958), O Sacrum Convivium (Thomas Tallis 1505-1585) and Evening Hymn (Henry Balfour Gardiner 1877-1950). A concert of serenades can be heard in the historic Old Court House (corner of St John’s Road and Talfourd Street, not far from the Glebe post office) on Friday 27th November at 7-30pm. The Michelangeli Ensemble formed in 1997 by James Kortum (flute), Mirabai Peart (violin), Valmai Coggins (viola), Julia Ryder (cello) and Verna Lee (harp) will perform works by Beethoven, Riisager, Persichetti and Roussel. Tickets $15/$10.
 
Margaretta Cottage at 6 Leichhardt Street, Glebe Point, is the musical home of the Glebe Music Festival and will host a concert by the Charisma Trio and piano duo Robert Weatherburn and Wojciech Wisniewski on Sunday 29th November at 3pm. The Charisma Trio (David Miller piano, Ros Dunlop clarinet and Wendy Dixon soprano) will perform Franz Schubert: Der Hirt auf dem Felsen (trio), Robert Schumann: Phantasiestucke (clarinet & piano), Michael Head: song cycle “Over the Rim of the Moon” (1. The ships of Arcady, 2. Beloved, 3. A blackbird singing, 4. Nocturne), and John McCabe: three folk songs: i) Johnny has gone for a soldier, ii) Hush-a-ba birdie, croon, croon, iii) John Peel Trio. Piano duo Robert Weatherburn and Wojciech Wisniewski: will perform 10 Waltzes – Johannes Brahms Op 39, Mnajdra – Robert Weatherburn, Habanera – Obsession and Bahama Rumba – John Carmichael, Morning Song, Sea Chant, Little Serenade, Left Bank Waltz – Peter Sculthorpe, and Romance and Russian Song – Serge Rachmaninov. Tickets $20/$10 include refreshments and should be purchased in advance.
 
The Lyon String Trio, on tour with Musica Viva, will be performing on Tuesday 1st December at 7pm at Gleebooks, 49 Glebe Point Road. French violinist Julien Dieudegard, Belgian violist Nathan Braude and Australian cellist Martin Smith will perform works by Dohnányi, Grandage, Beethoven and Huss. They will perform Ernö von Dohnányi’s Serenade in C major, Op.10, for string trio, written in 1902 and published in Vienna two years later. The Australia Council has commissioned a piece by the leading young Australian composer Iain Grandage for the Lyon String Trio 2009 tour. This piece will be performed at the Glebe Music Festival concert. The Lyon String Trio will also perform the String Trio Opus 9 No. 3 by Beethoven and "Muurwerk" trio by the Belgian composer Walter Huss (b.1959). Tickets $20/$10 include refreshments.
 
The final concert in the 20th Glebe Music Festival will be by Coro Innominata at St Scholastica’s Chapel, corner of Arcadia Road and Avenue Road Glebe, at 3pm on Sunday 6th December. The concert is entitled “Handel and Haydn: a celebration”. Bookings and tickets are available from www.innominata.org

1. Romance for Wind and Brass Quintets by the Australian composer Ralph Middenway.
 
The work is based on images from Shakespeare’s The Tempest and is scored for a dectet of wind instruments. Interspersed will be readings from the play itself and some song settings of Shakespeare by Gerald Finzi and Eric Korngold. The songs will be sung by Amy Corkery (soprano) and Morgan Pearse (baritone), accompanied by David Miller.
 
2. Work for wind dectet by the American composer Robert Washburn.
 
3. Two works for wind quintet: Ravel’s Tombeau de Couperin and a Mozart quintet.
 
Preceded by a carillon recital by Edward Grantham in the quadrangle at 2pm
