In 1936 a New Theatre anti-Nazi play, Offensive to a Friendly Foreign Power, was banned for "the preservation of good manners and decorum."

The New Theatre defied the ban and the subsequent police raid made newspaper headlines and guaranteed good audiences  – as did another raid on another New Theatre production starring John Hargreaves in 1968.
