On Monday 8th June 2009 the Queen’s Birthday Honour’s List was announced, and several Glebe residents who are members of the Glebe Society received Awards.  The local residents are:

Michael Horsburgh AM

Michael Horsburgh has been honoured "For service to the community, particularly through the Anglican Church of Australia and through theological and social welfare education".  Michael is a former head of Social Work at the University of Sydney and formerly Chair of the Academic Board of the Sydney College of Divinity. He is also the Chairman of the Board of the Anglican Board of Mission – Australia. Michael is a longstanding parishioner of St James’ Church, Sydney, a diocesan reader and frequent preacher. Michael also participates as a teacher in other Christian education institutions, including the Aquinas Academy.  He has also been a Member of the Social Security Appeals Tribunal 

Robert Bruce OAM

Robert has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia "For service to the community, particularly through the Rotary Charity Regatta".  The Regatta is an annual yachting event organised by Robert and the Cruising Yacht Club to raise funds for a variety of charities including the Sydney Children’s Hospital at Randwick.

Jeremy Long OAM

Jeremy Long received his award "For service to the indigenous community, to the public sector, and to humanitarian groups".  Jeremy is a graduate from the University of Sydney, has been involved in the development of land rights legislation and establishment of Aboriginal organisations as an officer of the Office of Aboriginal Affairs, and later as Deputy-Secretary of the Department of Aboriginal Affairs from 1969 to 1982. In 1982 he was appointed Commissioner for Community Relations concerned with racial discrimination issues.  Mr Long works on Indigenous issues with the Australia Council for the Arts.

 
We congratulate these members of the Glebe Society for their many years of service to the community, and we are pleased to see that their work has been officially recognised in this way.
