Bernard Smith was a painter, writer, teacher, critic and philanthropist. He was the Foundation Professor of Contemporary Art and was Director of the Power Institute of Fine Arts, University of Sydney and was the inaugural President of the Glebe Society. Bernard Smith and his wife Kate authored the seminal 1973 book The Architectural Character of Glebe.
